2011-Aug-21, Sunday 10:27Vic Zhou admits he had experienced the most severe phase of depression:
“I had no feeling of pain, no fear of death. But now, I really am not sick,"
Nanfang Daily 2011 Aug 14
“Perhaps
you will not believe this, but when I first debut, I wanted to quit
every year. I wanted to say, ‘this is the last contract, and then I will
say good-bye to this e-circle.’”
Facing the Nanfang
interviewer, recalling those early debut times, bearded Vic Zhou
laughingly spoke. Amidst this conflict of resistance & compliance,
in the blink of an eye, Zai Zai Vic Zhou who has just turned 30 in June,
has endured a full 10 years.
This year should be considered Zai Zai busiest year since debut…….
Just
finished the inspirational romance film “LIVING* WITH FASHION”, he
continued with tear-jerker “MATCH-MADE IN HEAVEN” where he acted as
father/son with Xiao Xiao Bin. Thereafter, he’ll don warrior attire for
“SAVING GENERAL YANG” with Louis Koo, Li Chen, Wu Zun etc to act as
“Yang family seven generals”. But he said: "I cannot say I am fully
adapted to the e-circle, but at least I have found a balance between the
real me and the e-circle, or more accurately, I am working hard to
balance the relationship between these two.”
In early August,
Vic Zhou (Zai Zai) was in Beijing for the promotion of movie
“MATCH-MADE IN HEAVEN” and accepted Nanfang’s interview. He talked about
his painful development along the way. He said, “After so much, I
believe the present time is my best moment."
Entertainment
Circle’s Unhappiness : Previously had to comply to contract, once the
contract expires will say good-bye to the e-circle
"I was popular the moment I debuted, the kind of popularity that other
people could only dream of. Everybody’s attitude towards me was one of
no choice, on the surface a lot of people bowed to me, but in their
hearts they actually did not accept me."
In 2007, when Zai Zai and Patty Hou acted in “SWEET RELATIONSHIP”, crew members
addressed him as “Zai Zai Ge (big brother)”. A year later in “JIN DA
BAN”, some people started to address me as “ZZ Sifu (master)”. “The
words Zai Zai matched with “Ge” or “Sifu” are very weird.” Zai Zai
laughed loudly. Zai Zai admits he likes to observe other people. “ I
like to observe the expression in their eyes, read what they are
thinking beyond the spoken words.”
“Perhaps it was because I am in this industry. I was popular the moment I debuted, the
kind of popularity that other people could only dream of. Everybody’s
attitude towards me was one of no choice, “He is popular ah! I have to
be good to him ah! “. On the surface a lot of people bowed to me, but in
their hearts they actually did not accept me."
In 2001, “METEOR GARDEN” created the F4 legend, also made Zai Zai red hot
popular, immediately became fans’ one and only “Melancholy Prince”, the
one with misty eyes, flowing hair, and moves with an aura that only
existed in a manga.
“But many people look down on me, especially those in the industry. (They say) is he a singer? No, but he
is singing; Is he is an actor? No, but he was acting; What is he? Just a
vase." Zai Zai said he is someone who likes to introspect/self-examine.
“Can I blame other people? Of course not, I can only blame myself for
not having any good quality works to convince them.”
He started to attempt different acting roles, from idol drama “MARS”,
“SWEET RELATIONSHIP” TO “BLACK & WHITE”, from movie “LINGER”, “TEA
FIGHT”, “LOVE YOU 10000 YEARS”, one or two productions per year, Zai Zai
explored this route at his own pace. “MARS can be considered the one
production that made me start to understand things properly.” Looking
back on his acting career, Zai Zai pointed out this dark idol drama.
“Before that, I was just fulfilling the contract, counting out the
3-year contract, wondering how to complete one year after another, so
that I can say good-bye to this e-circle. But “MARS” gave me an
opportunity, an opportunity to leave the vase.” From then on, Zai Zai
fell in love with acting, and discovered that time in the difficult
e-circle started to move faster. “I gave myself a plan, the goals to be
achieved in a year, but I discovered that one year is simply not
possible, then let it be two years. Time “wow” and it is passed, then
I’ll think ‘Wah, I have set my goals too high. Then, I’ll say to myself.
‘No, no, have to put in more effort.’”
The goal that Zai Zai set for himself is this: "I hope that one day when everybody
sees me and call me ‘Zai Zai’, they can think of me as an actor, with my
own stand-alone designation, a designation that is my own, no one can
replace. Zai Zai does not 'belong' to anybody, does not “resemble”
anybody. Just like the current Stephen Chow, Andy Lau. I believe there
is still a long way to go, must do it step by step slowly. "
30 years old Zai Zai says, this is his best moment, this year he accepted
three movies at one go. “Firstly, because I have come of age. Many roles
were offered to me. Secondly, I believe that my performance has been
acknowledged by everyone.” Part of this self-confidence came from the
recognition brought by “Black & White”. At that time, he and Mark
Chao were nominated as GBA finalists, and finally Mark Chao won the
award. “Although the nomination in itself is an acknowledgement, many
people still want to win the trophy bah.” Recalling his unhappy
expression at that time, Zai Zai said honestly, “When the name announced
was not mine, but still have to smile and clap, that really needs
practice. But my gloomy expression was not because I was displeased with
anyone else, but because I was angry with myself. I was disappointed
with myself.” This candid expression aroused media’s heated debate, and
caused him and Mark Chao embarrassment.
"I especially do not like to have the focus on myself. TaoZi-jie told me early on that I
really am not suited for this e-circle ... I am afraid of strangers,
whatever the activity, even when I can be the leader, I would prefer to
become the follower; If I find the focus is on me, I will create another
focal point. I do not like to be the center of attention." Because of
this characteristic, before each interview, he would “implore” the host
whom he is familiar with to ask more questions to the other newbie, “
don’t focus on an actor who has already been around for 10 years, so
that the e-circle can attract new entrants.”
Family’s Pain. Teacher’s one word “Are you ok?” made me cry loudly
"My relationship with my father is really strange. I return home once a
year, in the morning, I would say 'morning'; Father will make tea, pass
me the tea and said, 'drink'; At night I would say 'good night'. It's
that simple. "
Zai Zai likes to lose himself into a crowd, largely because of his family environment when he was a child.
"I'm the second child at home, the younger one, can be considered the
youngest in the family, and so I was extremely pampered. So pampered
that I did not know what is proper, did not know how to have respect for
seniors, and did not know that I had deprived other children of the
right to be pampered. I only knew to act spoiled, because acting spoiled
can get more love than other children. One time, I suddenly woke up,
because I heard my brother and father in a very serious quarrel because
of me. Brother feels that the family did not need him, only needs me ...
... from that day on I was forced to mature. Even since then, whatever
good things I have I would let my family members have priority. I gave
them all." Zai Zai now undertakes the entire family's livelihood, as
long as the family want to something, he will support one hundred
percent, "I always tell them that the money does not matter, I could
earn it again! "
In actual fact, his family has given Zai Zai a lot of insufficiency. At first grade
during summer vacation, Zai Zai's parents divorced. What was the causes
of his parents' divorce and the consequences, Zai Zai did not reflect on it and
has no way to find out, but what he also did not know was that this change
would have an effect on his entire life. At that time, Zai Zai already knew he had to
be strong, and the way he acted strong was to put on an indifferent
look. When school re-opened, on the first day during the flag-raising
ceremony, the teacher called to Zai Zai, the teacher just asked one
question: "Are you okay?" Zai Zai justed started to cry loudly. "That’s
when I realized I had suppressed my feelings too long. A seemingly calm
summer vacation, I looked perfectly normal, but in fact I was acting."
After this incident, the original "Crazy guy" (extroverted) Zai Zai
started to become introverted."
“All along I would save money, this time I want to buy a TV, another time want to buy
that gaming machine, to fill up my room, because this way I don’t have to go
out to see my family members.”
"I have lived with my father, but you know, Chinese parent-child communication is
not so open like foreigners." Everyday, his father would see Zai Zai come home from
school, would start cooking without asking him whether he is hungry.
When Zai Zai sees the table full of food, often he would eat until he
nearly vomited rather than waste his father's efforts. Father & son
knot/tension was finally untied one night when his father confessed when
drunk, his father said to Zai Zai: "You don’t talk to me, can I be
happy? Divorce was what I wanted? I just want you to talk to me ... "
After Zai Zai heard, he replied his father two words, " I know."
From that time on, although there is still very little father/son’s
dialogue, but that invisible barrier has disappeared. “My relationship
with my father is very strange. Nowadays, I may return home once a year.
In the morning when I meet Father, I will say ‘morning’; Father would
make tea, pass me the tea, say ‘Drink’; at night I will say “Good
night”. It’s that simple. Most of the time both of us would sit
together, make tea, do not talk; He’ll enjoy his world, I’ll enjoy my
world. But we know that both of us are very concerned about the other.
Zai Zai remembered his father once said “a very long speech”. Once, when
looking at his exhausted son, father said, “If you don’t want to act
anymore then don’t act, Zhou family don’t need a big star.”
ZaiZai told the Nanfang interviewer, although family may be broken, but
the love he got "is really a lot," His interactions with his father is
helpful to his experience in “MATCHMADE IN HEAVEN” father/son
relationship with Xiao Xiao Bin. "In the past I really did not
understand the feelings of a father, but this time my relationship with
my father made me realize the feelings, that children are really a great
responsibility."
Father's influence on Zai Zai is very big,
Zai Zai said his personality is like his father. "My father and I are
very meticulous people, but do not like to talk. I prefer to listen to
others, and then try to understand their mood; but we will not interrupt
other people if there is no need. We prefer to listen more, understand
more.
Father’s principles also affected Zai Zai, "Father is
very upright, will not betray his your dignity for a small profit. I
would also think, why do artists always think of making money, nothing
wrong with making, but you should earn money that is rightly yours, not
make money by ingratiating yourself. That's not my style. I really like
this script, then I will earn this money, this is really 'earned' money;
and not because someone offered me a high price, and say just come and
make a few expressions, that’s not earning money, that is dredging for
money. In this aspect, I am very much like my father, stubborn
character, nobody can persuade me to do otherwise. "
The pain of life. People like me are likely to be bullied in E-circle
"The Other Shore 1945" was a war film, my role was very depressive, that was
why I became thin. So don’t say again that I have a relapse of
depression, I get depressed everyday, ha ha! Everyone does too, but now I
really am not sick."
Although he had intensively accepted
more roles, Zai Zai still wish to continue to maintain a distance from
entertainment-circle that is just right, "Towards this e-circle, really
do not place to much importance on it." Zai Zai said, he has seen too
many people who disregard all else in order to climb upwards, while he
was just one who "does not want to fight/seize, just want to work
silently ", it is inevitable he gets bullied. "In fact, you say I do not
mind, of course I mind! I think this circle ... ... not just this
circle, people with my kind of personality, in many circles could easily
be bullied by others, other people used underhand methods to bully.
This is my character, I do not fight."
At times, Zai Zai
would get angry. “Don’t tell me, you do not want someone who is simple,
ordinary, uncomplicated? Instead you want someone who is hypocrite,
pre-packaged, defensive? In fact, many times I would think, I might as
well be that hypocrite, but after just one day, I would discover that I
really cannot go on…..I like the real me very much, want me to do phony
things, I just cannot do it.”
Every kind of negative emotions
accumulated and directly led to Zaizai contracting clinical depression
in 2005. "I experienced the most serious phase of depression. What is
the most serious? No feelings towards pain, not afraid to face death,
thinking that this matter of death is dispensable, that is, if I want to
die, I will die today." While it seems to be all peace and calm as
Zaizai is speaking, but the situation at that time was pretty bad. "I
really want to thank my friends, they were willing to listen to me.
During the period of my post-recovery, I often communicated with friends
who has positive mindset, telling them the status of my worst times. In
fact, as long as one is willing to say it out, that will be a help to
oneself, and the negative emotions will be less and less. "
As for his current thin condition, Zaizai explained that it due to being
too engrossed while filming the TV series "The Other Shore 1945" (Note:
formerly known as "Returning Home", starring Zai Zai, mainland actress
Yan Na and Wang Xue Qi). "The Other Shore 1945” is a film about war and
the role that I played was very repressed emotionally, and that is why I
lost so much weight. I was nursed back to health through traditional
Chinese medicine and is better now. Do not say anymore that I have a
relapse of depression, I can be depressed every day, ha ha! Everyone is
also the same, but I am really not sick now. "
Zai Zai has kept the same realness since his debut in the industry. According to his
own words, he separates his on-screen and off-screen self very far
apart. “In some degree, I think on the contrary that the “me” in front
of the camera, is the real me. Everyone asked me why I keep a moustache/
beard, I tell you that this is how I am in real life.” The current
Zaizai will sometimes become reticient/ quiet and sometimes become noisy
non-stop, sometimes full of words of great truths (principles),
sometimes babbling like a child “yi-yi ya-ya”; Towards strangers, he
will still act cool and handsome, and when with good friends like
Vanness Wu etc, he will act “meng” (cute) to get his own way, singing
Jay Chou's and Stanley Huang's rap songs; and without any embarrassment
he will wear slippers and with an unkempt appearance, run downstairs to
the convenience store to buy food and drinks, and when he hears someone
behind him discussing "is this guy Zaizai or not?", his mouth will
curved up as he smiles naughtily.
Zaizai’s quick question and quick answer
Do not like text messaging, do not play Facebook , MSN is always left opened online
Q: Do you have high frequency of using SMS via mobile phone via SMS?
A:
SMS can easily express oneself wrongly, just a punctuation that is
improperly used may cause misunderstanding, so I usually talk direct on
the phone.
Q: What do you normally do on the Internet? What is the longest time spent online?
A:
Playing online games, there was one time when I was defending Boss and
wanted to fight to upgrade my level, the longest was not going out for
one month, relying on friends for three meals a day.
Q: What is the biggest sense of accomplishment playing online game?
A:
It’s the same as me liking to buy a car. I like to collect things,
regardless of whether it suits the needs of my online character, when I
see something I will buy it and put it into the warehouse, and one day
when a friend is in need, I will give it away for free.
Q: What is it about the Internet that attracts you the most?
A:
In the internet I am an ordinary person, can say anything, when I am
not happy with something I can argue with others, no one knows who I am.
I can chat or play online games with users under 18 years old, when I
meet interesting people I can forward to friends for discussion. But
once they know who I am, I will stop to avoid unnecessary complications.
Q: Do you play Facebook and Twitter?
A: No. I think MSN is enough, and I have my own official website and I spend a lot of time online interacting with fans.
Q: How many times do you logged onto MSN on average?
A:
My computer is turned on 24 hours a day, MSN is always linked online. I
found that if I switch it on and off, people will know your daily
routine. Linking online continuously and going offline is the same
rationale, if I do not want to chat at that moment, I will not
immediately reply. After a while everyone will slowly get used to leave a
message first, and when I want to reply, I will do so at one go.

ordinary, uncomplicated?
